Longtime Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi announced Thursday that she will not seek reelection to Democratic leadership in the next Congress.
“With great confidence in our caucus, I will not seek reelection to Democratic leadership in the next Congress,” Pelosi said. “For me, the hour has come for a new generation to lead the Democratic caucus that I so deeply respect.”
The California Democrat made the announcement on the House floor on Thursday afternoon, describing herself as not only speaker of the house, but as a “wife, a mother, a grandmother,” and “a proud Democrat.”
“For my dear husband Paul, who has been my beloved partner in life and my pillar of support, thank you,” added Pelosi, referencing a recent attack on her husband. “We’re all grateful for all the prayers and well-wishes as he continues his recovery. Thank you so much.”
